Christmas Greetings

I am renting a Gite (Sep - March) and wanted to know how I stand with regards to the Habitation Tax etc. According to my Landlord (who lives here in France next door to the Gite he says that Hotel Impots have no record of the Gite so no assessment can be made)

Not my area of expertise Worried One, but I'm sure someone else will come forward with some ideas. In the meantime, welcome to the forum!

The  " Taxe d'Habitation " in France is paid by the person  , owner , tenant , or a person living there free of charge , on the 1st of January .

You say that you are renting from September to March which means that you are the person who will be there on the 1st  January  .

Consequently I would think  that it is you who should pay  , BUT , you say that the gite is not declared .

That complicates things so I am not in a position to help you but brings me to my question .
 Why do you ask  ?

Maybe it is just a part of the landlord's house, so not rated seperately.

The bills for taxe d'habitation arrive in October or November and are paid in the following December, so unless you are a French resident you are not likely to hear anything further.   I would think that for a short term let it would be the responsibility of the owner anyway.

I hate to say this, and it's not something you might want to hear, WO, but why has the Landlord not had the Gite assessed?
Sounds fishy to me, be on your toes.
Gites should be declared for Tax purposes.

Also bear in mind that if you live in France for more than 6 months of the year you are required to register for tax purposes.  The tax people may just ask where you were living on 1st Jan. as may the Mairie.  This may lead to the owner being asked about his tax affairs.  And so on . . . .

Thank you all for your responses ref Habitation Tax etc.  I am registered with Hotel Impot - I lived in the Auvergne prior to moving to Normandie in September 2009.

Happy Christmas Everyone
